Employment Type: Permanent | On-site

Join an Innovative Global Semiconductor Company

Our client is a leading South African technology company with a global presence, recognised for designing world-class semiconductor, sensing, and integrated circuit technologies. With more than 25 years of innovation and an extensive portfolio of patented solutions, they develop cutting-edge products that serve customers across international markets.

As their engineering team continues to grow, they are seeking a Junior Electronic Hardware Test Engineer (Characterization Engineer) to join their Integrated Circuit (IC) division. This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hands-on testing, problem-solving, and working with advanced semiconductor technologies.

Duties & Responsibilities

About the Role

As a Characterization Engineer, you will be responsible for testing, validating, and characterising integrated circuits, including microcontrollers, analogue sensors, and LED driver technologies. You'll work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop test hardware and firmware, analyse performance, troubleshoot technical issues, and contribute to the development of next-generation semiconductor products.

This role offers excellent exposure to cutting-edge electronic design and is ideal for an engineer looking to build a career within the semiconductor industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform testing and characterisation of integrated circuits, including microcontrollers, analogue sensors, magnetic sensors, capacitive sensors, light sensors, and LED driver devices.
  • Develop and execute hardware test procedures to validate product performance against design specifications.
  • Analyse test results, identify trends, investigate failures, and prepare detailed technical reports.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware performance issues through systematic troubleshooting.
  • Develop, maintain, and debug test software and firmware used during characterisation.
  • Interpret analogue and digital schematics to support hardware validation.
  • Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and IC design engineers throughout the product development cycle.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and follow established engineering processes and quality standards.
  • Provide technical support on engineering projects as required.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • BEng or MEng in Electronic Engineering.
  • 2–5 years' practical experience in electronic hardware development, testing, or validation.
  • Solid understanding of electronic circuits and integrated circuit technologies.
  • Experience with embedded microcontroller development (such as Microchip PIC, STM8, STM32, or similar).
  • Proficiency in C and C++ programming.
  • Experience with Python or other scripting languages.
  • Knowledge of PCB design and layout.
  • Experience with analogue circuit simulation using SPICE-based tools.
  • Exposure to FPGA development would be advantageous.
  • Experience with VHDL, Verilog, and Git will be beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Windows-based development environments.
  • Understanding of Quality Management Systems (QMS) is advantageous.

What We're Looking For

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • A methodical and detail-oriented approach to engineering.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • A passion for technology and continuous learning.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
