Introduction

As an Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Project Engineer, you will take full responsibility for the project lifecycle of the electrical and instrumentation part within a demanding, continuously running production environment. From initial budget and design to on-site procurement and execution, you'll ensure that every project is delivered safely, on time, and within budget. You will work closely with project managers, process engineers and maintenance teams, and you will feel just as at home behind a technical drawing board as on the shop floor where you coordinate the contractors.

Duties & Responsibilities

As an E&I Project Engineer, you take a project from the first estimate to the final delivery. Your responsibilities include:

  • Preparing cost estimates for the purchase, installation, commissioning and documentation of E&I equipment, and monitoring expenses to accurately report to the project manager
  • Contribute to the overall project planning by estimating material delivery times and required labor hours
  • Processing purchase orders for E&I materials and services, and checking deliveries before approving payment
  • Organizing project documentation, issuing weekly schedule updates, and tracking hours per project
  • Liaise daily with site foremen to align priorities and resolve issues during execution, and occasionally manage contractor groups of around thirty specialists during peak periods
  • Intervene yourself in the event of complex problems during installation or commissioning, and call in external expertise where necessary
  • Inspecting installations during execution and checking the completed work and documentation for post-delivery specifications
  • Review supplier and contractor bids against technical specifications, then place orders in consultation with the project and procurement managers
  • Mapping the existing and required E&I infrastructure prior to each project to support an accurate budget
  • Translating approved project requirements into detailed specifications and work packages, ensuring alignment with NEN, ATEX and CE requirements

Desired Experience & Qualification

You are a structured, hands-on engineer who is just as at home with a spreadsheet as with technical drawings. You'll take ownership of your projects from budget to completion, communicate clearly with people at every level — from contractors to plant management — and won't shy away from a difficult decision under time pressure.

  • A Bachelor's degree (or Red Seal equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation & Control
  • At least 5 years of experience in a highly automated process environment
  • Solid knowledge of and experience with process automation systems
  • Broad process knowledge, or the ability to build it quickly, across a large industrial site
  • Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills
  • Familiarity with NEN, ATEX and CE standards for electrical and instrumentation work (or willingness to achieve them)
  • High proficiency with standard engineering and office software, including spreadsheets, drawing tools, and project planning applications
  • Valid driver's license
  • Fluent in both English and Afrikaans
