Introduction

Design transmission and distribution substations from 132 kV to 400 kV and OHL. Experience with 765 kV AC or DC systems is advantageous.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review, or prepare designs, specifications, and tender documents for substations
  • Prepare detailed engineering and construction drawings (SLDs, layouts, protection, etc.).
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis (load flow, short circuit, protection studies).
  • Select appropriate substation equipment.
  • Prepare design reports, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Review contractor designs for compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to IEC, IEEE, and SANS standards.
  • Attend stakeholder meetings and prepare minutes.
  • Support construction and commissioning phases, including technical queries and inspections.
  • Prepare and review project scope, methodology, schedules, and budgets.
  • Maintain relationships with divisions, contractors, and clients.
  • Stay updated on technical procedures and specifications.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • B.Eng in Electrical Engineering
  • Member of the ECSA
  • Electrical engineering experience in the field of substation detailed design – primary plant and OHL
  • Proficiency with modelling software such as CDEGs or similar would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency with CAD design software or similar (MicroStation).
