About the position

This position is responsible for performing, under supervision, challenging engineering work in PPL's Substation Engineering Department. The role involves working in the field, office, and home office, engaging in a variety of functions that develop competencies in substation design. Responsibilities include performing physical/electrical and relay design, oversight of internal and external engineering resources, and managing the budget, schedule, and deliverables for assigned work. The engineer will work on substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV, utilizing existing procedures to investigate, evaluate, and assist in producing technically correct and cost-effective designs and recommendations that address ongoing problems. The engineer will develop technical expertise with the design of substation equipment, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, AC and DC systems, microprocessor relays, and protection schemes. They will provide engineering expertise and technical support during the planning and construction phases of large, complex substation design projects. The role also involves overseeing contract engineers and coordinating engineering activities across multiple disciplines and work groups, fostering relationships that facilitate knowledge transfer and effective presentation of work products. Additionally, the engineer will gather and correlate basic engineering data using well-defined engineering procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems, as well as engineering studies. The position requires taking the initiative to continually expand and improve technical and business skills, assisting in developing innovative procedures, improved design recommendations, and new or better equipment purchase recommendations. The engineer may also be assigned to an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role, which requires working after hours during storms and emergencies to restore power or address customer service issues. Other duties and projects may be assigned as needed.
