Minimum Qualification: 
  • BEng / BSc Eng / BTech / Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent recognised qualification (NQF Level 7)
 
Preferred Qualification:
  • Postgraduate qualification in Electrical Engineering, Asset Management, Project Management or a related field will be an added advantage.
 
Required professional registration:
  • Registration with ECSA as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) or Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng)
 
Minimum Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant post-qualification experience in electrical engineering within water, wastewater, utilities, heavy industrial or infrastructure environments.
  • Experience in planning and design, project specification, contract administration, commissioning, maintenance support, and condition assessment of electrical plant and distribution systems.
  • Experience in managing contractors, interpreting standards, preparing technical reports and working in a regulated public-sector or utility environment will be advantageous.
 
Key Outputs:
Reporting to the Senior Manager: Planning and Design, the employee will:
  • Electrical planning, design and development of water services infrastructure
  • Prepare and review feasibility inputs, load assessments, concept reports, design criteria, calculations, layouts, schematics and technical reports for treatment works, pump stations, substations, MCCs, standby generation, control panels, cabling and power reticulation.
  • Engineering support to operations and maintenance
  • Undertake condition assessments, technical investigations, root-cause analyses and reliability improvement initiatives for plant and network assets.
  • Project specification and project management
  • Manage OPEX and approved minor CAPEX electrical projects from initiation, planning and design through tender support, construction monitoring, testing, commissioning, close-out and handover.
  • OHS, legal compliance and governance
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Electrical Installation Regulations, Electrical Machinery Regulations, relevant SANS codes and any other applicable legal and corporate requirements.
  • Asset management and performance optimisation
  • Apply asset management principles aligned to lifecycle planning, risk, criticality, maintenance strategies, asset information quality and continuous improvement.
 
Key Competencies:
  • Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, applicable regulations, legal appointments and safe work systems relevant to electrical assets and industrial plant.
  • Knowledge of asset management principles, lifecycle planning, reliability improvement and condition-based decision-making.
  • Knowledge of PFMA, SCM processes, contract administration, quality management and environmental compliance applicable to the water sector.
  • Computer literacy in spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, maintenance or asset systems, and engineering design or modelling tools.
  • Valid unendorsed driver’s license and willingness to travel to sites and work after hours when operationally required.
