This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Electrical Engineer to join our Property & Buildings Team in Irvine, CA.

This opportunity is ideal for an emerging engineering professional who is passionate about sustainable design, decarbonization, and renewable energy systems. As part of our multidisciplinary Property & Buildings team, you will support the planning, design, and delivery of electrical systems associated with commercial, institutional, healthcare, higher education, science & technology, and industrial facilities, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy and energy transition projects.

You will work alongside experienced engineers and project teams to deliver innovative solutions involving solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), microgrids, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and other sustainable building technologies. This role offers the opportunity to contribute throughout the entire project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and conceptual planning through design, construction, and commissioning.

Your Impact

  • Assist with the design and analysis of building electrical systems, including: 
    • Power distribution systems
    • Emergency and standby power systems
    • Fire alarm systems
    • Low-voltage and special systems
  • Support the planning and design of renewable energy systems, including: 
    • Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems
    • Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
    • Electric vehicle charging infrastructure
    • Distributed energy resources and microgrid systems
    • Control systems integration
  • Prepare Title 24 energy compliance calculations and supporting documentation.
  • Develop HelioScope preliminary solar PV layouts and site configurations.
  • Generate HelioScope production reports and energy yield analyses.
  • Perform string sizing calculations and support DC system design activities.
  • Utilize inverter configuration and manufacturer design tools to assist with equipment selection and system optimization.
  • Support in the development of product design and system configuration tools through product documentation research and categorization.
  • Establish project documentation and drawing sheet indexes in accordance with company standards.
  • Research and document applicable: 
    • Local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements
    • District requirements, where applicable
    • Utility interconnection requirements and service standards
    • Product technical literature (datasheets, manuals, drawings)
  • Assist in the preparation of electrical calculations, technical reports, and construction documents.
  • Support the development of electrical single-line diagrams and renewable energy system layouts under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Support the development of automation tools and processes for Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD drawings through self-directed learning and coaching.

  • Coordinate with architects, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, civil engineers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in project meetings and contribute to multidisciplinary design coordination efforts.
  • Conduct field investigations, site assessments, construction observations, and commissioning activities as required.
  • Assist with permit application packages and support responses to plan review comments.
  • Support construction administration activities, including: 
    • Submittal reviews
    • Requests for Information (RFIs)
    • Contractor coordination
  • Develop engineering designs and construction documentation using Revit, AutoCAD, and related software platforms.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and renewable energy industry best practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 1-3 years of relevant electrical engineering experience within consulting engineering, building systems design, renewable energy, power systems, or related industries.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Working knowledge of (single/three phase) electrical power systems and building electrical design principles (low voltage <5kV).
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, ETAP, Helioscope, PVsyst, or similar engineering software.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable building codes.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience using Construction/Project Management platforms like Procore.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting renewable energy projects including solar PV, battery energy storage, microgrids, or EV charging infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency, sustainability, and decarbonization strategies.
  • Knowledge of medium voltage (MV) electrical power systems.
  • Experience working on commercial, healthcare, higher education, science & technology, industrial, or mission-critical facilities.
  • LEED Green Associate, WELL AP, NABCEP or similar sustainability credential.
  • Familiar with residential/commercial architecture, architectural standards, and building elements.
  • Working knowledge of distributed energy resource SCADA systems or building automation/managements systems.
  • Interest in pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

Compensation: 

Expected Salary (all locations): $84,500 - $116,200

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
